Quick answer: Start with output disabled: check input compatibility, load demand, external wiring, settings and error indications. Do not open a high-voltage supply or bypass protections to diagnose an unexpected shutdown.

No output or unexpected shutdown

Check output enable, configured limits, displayed errors and any documented inhibit/interlock condition. Verify that the ordered mains input is correct. With output disabled, inspect the external load and connections; do not bypass an interlock or protection to force operation.

Output lower than the selected voltage

Identify CV or CC state. A current-limited supply may intentionally reduce voltage, and a multi-range source may reach its power ceiling. Measure at the correct point with a suitably rated instrument; lead drop can also separate terminal voltage from DUT voltage.

Noise or heat

Fan sound and electrical ripple are different symptoms. Check ventilation and environmental limits without opening the equipment. Electrical noise requires an appropriate measurement method and bandwidth; an audible sound does not quantify output ripple.

Prepare a fault record

  • Model and configuration, input supply and environmental conditions.
  • Selected voltage/current/protection settings and actual load requirement.
  • Error indication, CV/CC state and measured behaviour.
  • What changed before the fault and which external checks were completed.

Service boundary

High-voltage supplies and connected capacitors can retain hazardous energy. Follow the discharge instructions and use qualified service for internal diagnostics. Do not make improvised component changes based on a generic troubleshooting article.

Practical checks

CheckWhat to verify
No outputCheck output enable, interlocks if fitted and error state.
Low outputCheck CV/CC state and voltage/current/power limits.
Noise/heatSeparate fan operation from output ripple and inspect ventilation.
ServiceRecord the fault and arrange qualified assessment when needed.

Compare a supply for your test

Explore variable DC power supplies or review 800V DC power supplies. Specify your operating voltage, current, power, load type and required controls for selection a configuration.
